Old song line, We got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

That’s how I felt. Lots to do, folks to aid, bad guys to cheat, medical bills to be paid.

While I waited for the paperwork from Sam that would release DeShon from Bishop Kowalski’s control, and he waited on a crooked lawyer we knew to provide it, I thought about what to do.

Getting DeShon and Leticia out of harm’s way was good, but I’d need to cover him with his basketball team. A multi-million-dollar asset couldn’t just vanish. He needed to be excused. I decided that Merle Crookshanks was the best choice.

“Merle, I need you to run a play.”

“Sure. Who, what, where, when?” None of us ever asked why. It was sort of understood.

“Right away. DeShon’s basketball team. Get him a two-week suspension or vacation or something. I need him out of the way while I go after somebody else.”

“The crooked manager?”

“What? You knew about him?”

“No, but it makes sense. Plus, I heard he had a henchman even bigger than me. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put two and two together.”

“Damn. You are one smart cookie,” I said, smiling.

“I’m not just a pretty face, you know,” he said modestly.

“Merle, you’re not a pretty face at all.”
